Washington County ARES group will meet every other month (starting in January 2008) on the 2nd Tuesday at 7 PM in the Emergency Operations Center located on Spring Street one block east of College. The EOC is the former juvenile detention facility. The liaison with Washington County is John Luther W5LED who is the director of Search & Rescue / 911 Emergency Services. All amateur radio operators who are interested in emergency communications are welcome to attend. Meetings will include training and are a good way to become familiar with Washington County's emergency communications structure. The next meeting will be Tuesday, July 8th, 2008. |

The Joe Martin Stage Event was a big success (Friday & Saturday May 9 & 10). We look forward to doing communications for the event again next year, but we need more manpower! Next year will bring an expansion of services provided and we will definitely need more hams to participate.
I (Hal K5NOW) was set up for the Friday race just west of Rudy. The metal gate was an ideal structure to attach the antenna mast (pole designed for bird houses!). The tape measure yagi was able to reach the 147.700 repeater south of Elkins with a good signal using 10 watts. Next time, bring sunscreen!
Billy N5QEM was set up Saturday in greater metropolitan Hogeye using his new antenna base bracket. Parking a vehicle on the bracket makes a stable platform to attach an antenna mast. A stabilizing bar attached to the luggage rack held the mast securely. The mast is made of triangular aluminum and is designed for erecting Purple Martin bird houses. The mast collapses internally and is ideal for portable antennas. Having the 147.760 and 147.700 repeaters linked allowed the operators to have solid communications with the finish line in Fayetteville. Stay tuned for a list of the operators who participated in the race. I don't have a complete list at the moment so I don't want to accidentally leave someone out! |
